About Modern Family TV Show

It's time to say good-bye to the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan. "Modern Family" leaves the air after 11 seasons on April 8th. Here's what to expect for the series finale:

What is "Modern Family" about?

"Modern Family" debuted in 2009 and has since netted 22 Emmy's and 250 episodes. Over the course of 11 seasons, the series became a household name in America. It earned five Emmy's for Outstanding Comedy Series, tying it with the legendary sitcom, "Frasier."

Here's the official series summary from ABC: "The Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker clan is a wonderfully large and blended family with Jay Pritchett sitting at the head. By his side is his vivacious, younger second wife Gloria, and together they are navigating life with a new baby, Joe, and Gloria's teenage son Manny, who has taken to high school with the same charm and gusto he's had since he was little. Meanwhile, Jay's grown daughter, Claire, and her husband, Phil, are trying to keep up as their kids grow up right before their eyes with the youngest, Luke, now a sophomore in high school; middle daughter, Alex, is graduating this year and looking at colleges, and eldest, Haley, is living at home and pursuing a career. Then there's Claire's brother and Jay's grown son, Mitchell, who just married his longtime love Cameron. Both are enjoying life as newlyweds and raising their sassy adopted six-year-old daughter Lily. These three families are unique unto themselves, and together they give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family."

When can I watch the "Modern Family" season finale?

ABC is pulling out all the stops for long-time fans. A special one-hour documentary about the making of "Modern Family" will air April 8th at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Immediately following this look-back at the series, ABC will air back-to-back episodes as an hour-long season finale starting at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

Co-creator Christopher Lloyd spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what it was like to film the series finale. "It's kind of like when you're a kid and your best friend moves away — only it's 100 best friends," he told EW. Actor Ty Burrell had a similar feeling. "It was like a beautiful torture. It was like being at a wedding and a funeral at the same time," he told EW.

What is the "Modern Family" series finale about?

The "Modern Family" series finale will be broken into two parts, but ABC released synopses for both episodes.

The first episode, Season 11 Episode 17, follows Mitchell and Cam as they "settle into their new normal; Phil and Claire decide that one of the kids needs to move out; as Gloria becomes more successful at work, she notices Jay and the kids don't seem to need her as much."

The second episode, Season 11 Episode 18, offers this simple, yet heart-breaking description: "The family struggles with goodbyes."

What is the special "Modern Family" documentary about?

The one-hour documentary airing directly before the series finale will give fans an inside look at the making of "Modern Family." We'll see the cast and crew reflect on the show's 11-season run with special interviews and never-before-seen commentary. The documentary will also take viewers back to 2009, showing behind-the-scenes clips of writing and casting the pilot. According to the New York Post, casting directors combed through tapes of 232 actors for the role of Phil and 228 for the role of Cam. As an added bonus, fans will get to see a round-table read of the final script.

Who stars in "Modern Family"?

Series regulars include Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neill), Gloria Delgado (Sofía Vergara), Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen), Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet), Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland), Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter), Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould), Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez), Lily Tucker-Pritchett (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons), Fulgencio "Joe" Pritchett (Jeremy Maguire).
