What is "Star Trek: Lower Decks" about?

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" was created by Emmy Award winner Mike McMahan, known for "Rick and Morty" and "Solar Opposites." The series follows the support crew aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, in the year 2380. Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford, and Tendi have to "keep up with their duties and their social lives, often while the ship is being rocked by a multitude of sci-fi anomalies," according to CBS' offcial summary.

This is the first animated series in the "Star Trek" franchise, but the third CBS All Access exclusive, following "Star Trek: Picard" and "Star Trek: Discovery." Its premiere arrives just after the announcement of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" a series based on Section-31.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" will test audience appetite for a comedic show in a franchise that often handles complex and serious subject matter.
